Jun 3, 2008- Pics of the flame trench damage from last launch

As most have heard, there was some damage done to the pad during the last launch. Initial speculation is going through several possible causes: age of fire brick, fully loaded boosters made for heaviest payload launched, malfunction of the water deluge system. More will come out once investigations are complete, but since pad A is the only pad we are launching from, it will have to be repaired before the next launch. Luckily that isn’t until October, so there should be enough time to finish them.

First pic is of the trench and the missing section of brick.

and where most of them ended up– behind the pad. You can see a small buckling in the pad surface on the right side of the opening. No one knows what that is about yet.

The fence is normally brought down every launch by the exhaust plume force, but usually doesn’t have bricks the size of your head added to the situation. You can see the carcasses of some birds or other small creatures in amongst the debris (that is normal too, probably initially killed by the sound, which is above 140 decibles, or the plume blast).
