Jul 1, 2007- Final roll out preps (part 2)

The transporter was rolled in and mated to the orbiter on first shift. The orbiter was then raised off the ground to maintenance height.

It has 74 tires and is all wheel drive. Built by Lamborghini, it was made to support launches at Edwards AFB in the early years of the program and transport the vehicle from the runway to the processing facility.

We mate the tire separation harnesses once it is off the ground. These wires allow the vehicle to see tire pressures and temperatures realtime and also act as touchdown indicators when they break upon runway contact (wheel spin up).

After wheelwell inspections and photos, we raise the gear using hydraulic lines mated to fittings in the L/H external tank interface (no gear up lever in the vehicle).

The brown looking paper is used to protect the thermal barriers around the doors during door cycles and is pulled out once the doors are closed for flight.
